Line size

Hi,
i have 1 bulk storage tank and 1 day tank.capacity of bulk storage tank is 20KL and capacity of day tank is 5KL.i want transfer 4kL of methanol from bulk storage tank to day tank in 1hr.my pump capacity is 4m3/hr.now i want to calculate the suitable linesize to transfer 4KL in 1hr.I do not know the Velocity of methanol also.please healpon this...asap...

I would suggest you to try with 1 m/s velocity and you get 37.6 mm for 4 m3/h. This can do if the pressure drop is not to big - depending on the pipe length and height difference.

Why should we go for 1m/s with 37.6 mm daimeter.
Why can,t we go for less daimeter with more velocity....

Is there any standard procedure or any trail and error methods to calculate this....please suggest us. i am new to these calculations....

1 m/s is just my suggestion.

To make full solution of your problem you should know:
1. levels in both tanks - geodetic
2. pressure above fluid in tank
3. viscosity
4. all fittings and valves on the way with resistance coefficients
5. pump flow rate - head diagram
6. pipe length
7. pipe internal diameter- to be calculated,
8. density

With this inforamation you should use Bernoulli equation and Darcy equation.

thanks for your valuable suggestion....
i have all the data which you mentioned.....
can you please explain me how to calculate internal daimeter....
i know one procedure i.e based on moody friction factor & dancy headloss equation we can calculate by trail n error method.but it takes lot of time to calculate the required daimeter.

Is there any alternative method....?

and when we will go for hygen poisselle equation...?
