Gas fire pit sizing for existing gas line

I have an existing 3/4" gas line that termnates in the backyard it is currently used for a BBQ. I want to install a fire pit instead of the BBQ and need to properly size the fire pit to match the capability or max btu for my line.

Instead of doing the flow calculations (which may be difficult since the pipe is reduced down to 1/2" somewhere? along the run to the meter), I was hoping to rent a simple meter so I can test the actual output at the BBQ under various loads (other fireplaces running in the house, etc) to really get a good sense for what the existing bbq line can deliver.

I found a forty dollar meter that measures natural gas in terms of water displacement zero to fifteen inches. Can someone point me to a chart or formula to convert that dispplacement measurement into max btu?
