Velocity and pipe sizing

Post by mirza_kibria »

Hi, My name is Mirza Kibria. I am working in UAE on an articial island for oil rigging operation.
I want to size piping for following:

1. Sea water shall be pumped to a distance of 400 - 500 meters to RO Units
2. Flow rate is to be maintained 2000GPM
3. Pump shall be driven by Diesel
4. Throuout 500 meters, 15 nos. valves and bends envisazed.

I want to find out pipe diameter and supply pressure of the pumps.
And any special features the pumps should have.
Need Forum's help. Thanks.

For 2000 GPM I get with quick calculation using pipe diameter calculator at:
http://www.pipeflowcalculations.com/flowrate/

following results:

1. volumetric flow rate (q):
q : 2000 gpm US

3. diameter (D):
D : 15.780375 in

4. velocity (v):
v : 1 m/s

Please note that I have set velocity to 1 m/s which can only be used as starting point for calculation.

To calculate pump pressure required, height difference should also be known. If it is zero, than pump pressure can be calculated using pressure drop calculator at:
http://www.pipeflowcalculations.com/pressuredrop/

For calculation, oil viscosity is very important. Do you know the value of it?
