water flow throgh a new valve?

Post by bobwps »

I need to calculate the maximum water flow through a valve when the inlet pressure is 3 bar, pipe size is 22mm, valve connection size 15mm. However I do not know the pressure drop through the valve, it is a newly manufactured plastic valve with a solenoid shut off.

Every valve has different pressure drop curve and it is not possible to know maximum flow if valve resistance coefficient K is not known.
Maximum possible flow through 15 mm orifice can be calculated and it is for 3 bar differential pressure of water using orifice plate calculator:

Orifice plate calculator

1. tube diameter (D1):
D1 : 25 mm
2. orifice diameter (D2):
D2 : 15 mm
3. pressure in front of orifice (p1):
p1 : 4.013 bar
4. pressure after orifice (p2):
p2 : 1.01325 bar
6. kinematic viscosity (ν):
ν : 1.006 mm2/s
8. density (ρ):
ρ : 1000 kg/m3
9. volume flow rate (q):
q : 170.76782 l/min

13. Reynolds number in front of orifice (ReD):
ReD : 144087.98
14. coefficient of discharge (C):
C : 0.6134395

Depending on the shape of valve, maximum flow rate will be lower or higher than calculated above.
