Gas Flow through an orifice

Post by matt1987 »

I have a 1" sch 40 pipe (1.047" I.D.) with a .262" diameter orifice plate in it. It is flowing natural gas.
Pressure before the orifice plate is 13.5" wc with a pressure differential of 5.5" wc.

What is the flow rate of the gas after the orifice?
Assume standard temperature.

Thanks!

You can use orifice plate calculator for this calculation

Here is report that I get from it:

Orifice plate calculator

1. tube diameter (D1):
D1 : 1 in

2. orifice diameter (D2):
D2 : 0.262 in

3. pressure in front of orifice (p1):
p1 : 13.5 inWS

4. pressure after orifice (p2):
p2 : 1993.3918 Pa

5. pressure drop (p1-p2):
p1-p2 : 5.5 inWS

6. kinematic viscosity (ν):
ν : 461.94397 mm2/s

7. dynamic viscosity (μ):
μ : 10.4E-006 Pas

8. temperature (T):
T : 288 K

9. density (ρ):
ρ : 0.022513554 kg/m3

10. gas constant (R):
R : 518.8 J/kgK

11. spec. heat ratio (κ):
κ : 1.3

12. volume flow rate (q):
q : 24.526405 m3/h

13. weight flow rate (w):
w : 1.5338248E-004 kg/s

14. velocity in front of orifice (V1):
V1 : 13.445422 m/s

15. velocity in orifice (V2):
V2 : 195.87177 m/s

16. Reynolds number in front of orifice (ReD):
ReD : 739.2969

17. coefficient of discharge (C):

where does kinematic viscosity come from? is it a calculated value or something in a table depending on what the fluid is?
