high pressure water flow pipe sizing

Post by rogerchan »

Hi there,I have a question on pipe sizing.I'm designing the duct part of a high pressure fire suppression sys,i totally have no idea about it,now i'm seeking an optimizing solution, hope that experts in this forum could give an answer on it,thanks. :?
Q:
Is there any theoretical or empirical calculation method/equations for pipe sizing of high pressure water flow?(pressure range: 1450-2175psi)

It is a bit complex for short answer but I will try to give you a lead.

Here you can read some theory pages about fluid flow in pipe:
http://www.pipeflowcalculations.com/pipeflowtheory/

There is the list of all available text on this web site.

There you have some very important texts for your purpose:
http://www.pipeflowcalculations.com/pip ... locity.php
http://www.pipeflowcalculations.com/pip ... heorem.php
http://www.pipeflowcalculations.com/pip ... fluids.php

There you can find equations how to calculate pipe diameter for known flow rate. You should be around 1-2 m/s for water flow velocity.

When you have some pressure drop from the pump to the end of pipe line, you can calculate flow rate for that flow rate.

Hope it will give you good start.
